As a child, my father ran a small computer repair business out of our basement, and I have fond memories helping him troubleshoot, repair and build computers for his clients. Not only did I make more money repairing computers than I would've cutting grass, but these experiences had peaked my interests in computers, electronics and just about everything electrical. As I grew older other interests began to surface. Throughout high school I became very interested in mathematics and physics. The fact that numbers could quantify and evaluate the world around is not only something that I found interesting, but also very powerful. It was exciting to think that I could model, analyze and understand real world systems using mathematics and physics. Upon entering university, I chose to pursue engineering because it was a perfect marriage between all of my primary interests, all contained within an exciting, innovative and challenging field.

Lesson 2

Answer the following in 4 to 6 sentences

v. Express your views on: Christiano Ronaldo.

Throughout his career, Cristiano Ronaldo’s success has always been compared to someone else’s. In the early days, when he started to catch the international eye at Manchester United, the question was whether he will ever be able to do what Luis Figo did in his career. This comparison existed only for a short while. Short enough for people to forget it ever existed, and for good reason. for what came after that has polarised those who follow football for over a decade. Everything Ronaldo did was seen through the stencil of Lionel Messi’s achievements.

vi. Express your views /ideas on: Easy Success.

There is no such thing as easy success. All successes originate in mind. First of all it makes its presence felt in the form of a vision, idea, inspiration, or a dream. Turning the mental concept into tangible reality requires a long effort and perseverance. The entire course that leads to successful realization of one’s dream is ridden with obstacles, discouragements, failures, and setbacks. The person who wishes to be successful and is discouraged by failures can never ever taste the manna of success. The truth is our failures our stepping stones by whose medium we reach success.

vii. State any four qualities of Lionell Messi that has inspired you.

I am a diehard Ronaldo fan but I have a great respect for Messi. I have only two words for him - magical messi. His achievements and thinking inspires a lot , not only about football but about life also. The best thing which I like about Messi is balance. He has good lower body strength. Second thing is ability to read the game. He starts slow but once he understands the tactics of the other team then he is unstoppable. Third is control - he has an amazing control of the ball and that’s why he is magical. Fourth is dribbling. I don’t think I need to say anything about this. He is the best dribbler. His runs are direct, lethal.

viii. Describe the preparation stage of Ronaldo, the football legend.

As a child, Ronaldo played for amateur team Andorinha from 1992 to 1995,where his father was the kit man,and later spent two years with Nacional. In 1997, aged 12, he went on a three-day trial with Sporting CP, who signed him for a fee of £1,500. He subsequently moved from Madeira to Alcochete, near Lisbon, to join Sporting's other youth players at the club's football academy.[15] By age 14, Ronaldo believed he had the ability to play semi-professionally, and agreed with his mother to cease his education in order to focus entirely on football. While popular with other students at school, he had been expelled after throwing a chair at his teacher, who he said had "disrespected" him. However, one year later, he was diagnosed with a racing heart, a condition that could have forced him to give up playing football. He underwent an operation in which a laser was used to cauterise the affected area of his heart; discharged from hospital hours after the procedure, he resumed training only a few days later.

At 20, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started a company in a garage on April 1, 1976 after Steve saw a computer Wozniak designed for himself. Jobs named their company – Apple in memory of a happy summer he had spent as an orchard worker in Oregon. Later that year, the duo debuted the Apple I at the Homebrew Computer Club in Palo Alto, California. A local store offered to buy 50 machines and to finance the production, the duo had to sell their most expensive possessions. Jobs sold his Volkswagen van while Wozniak sold his Hewlett-Packard scientific calculator. The company's second product called Apple II became such a hit that it is credited to be the best selling computer in the 1970s and early 1980s. By 1982 however, his company sales sagged in the face of competition from IBM’s new PC.

xii. Write about your career dreams.

From a very young age, I've always been curious as to how things work.

Lesson 3

Answer the following in 4 to 6 sentences

v. Express the views of JRD TATA about a leader.

Approachable: - J.R.D. had no problems making friends easily. He had one of the most comfortable personalities that was probably his benchmark of becoming a successful individual. Diplomatic: - One of the most difficult talents is to say ‘no’ in a nice manner. But Diplomacy was never a problem for J.R.D. Even when he was angry at Nehru for going against industrialists, he was never rude but made his point diplomatically and walked away friends.Realistic: - J.R.D. never plunged into unviable projects, howsoever exciting they might be. He briefly flirted with the idea of making bombers with “Tata Aircraft”—but despite his love for flying, he shot down the project himself when it became clear that there was no money to be made. Charismatic: - When J.R.D. was elected chairman of the group, there was no question about the selection. There was no one else who could have been chosen by the board. J.R.D. by then was a hero. The daring pilot, the shrewd businessman. He was already outstanding.

vi. Express your views/ideas on: JRD Tata.

Aware of a sense of responsibility: - There were opportunities for J.R.D. where he was tempted to joined politics. But he rationalized to himself by concluding that he could do more for the country in business and industry than in politics. He says, “I had no doubt that freedom was on its way. But who knows, I might one day have an opportunity to serve in more useful ways than by going to jail today!”

Committed to values: - J.R.D. never believed in paying under the table for getting a license approved. He never believed in exploiting the workers, society and earning more profits. It was believed that wealth and respect are disjoint. J.R.D. was considered to be an exception to this rule.

A visionary: - J.R.D. was the only director on the board of the Tata group who supported Ratan Tata’s plan to enter high investment – high risk industries like oil manufacturing & computers. He believed, that being that stalwart business house of India, such investments were a responsibility.

ix. Summarize the contribution of JRD Tata as a philanthropist.

It seems on the face of it like a family pulling in different directions: a large majority of members devoted to the cause of making money in a classic capitalistic fashion, only for a substantially endowed minority to diligently give it away in a manner that could be described as characteristically altruistic. There is no dichotomy at play here, though, because the moneymakers and the money givers are entwined components of a business that has been crafted, by tradition, philosophy and practice, to do precisely that. Welcome to the world of the Tata group, and to a rationale quite unlike any other in modern-day entrepreneurship. Welcome, also, to a multifaceted and multi-layered business organization that generated revenues of Rs3.2 trillion ($67.4 billion) in 2009-10, with a global workforce of nearly 400,000 people, and 28 publicly listed companies and shareholder base of 3.5 million in India. The most significant of these shareholders, the Tata charitable trusts — two-thirds owners of Tata Sons, the promoter company of the group — are a lot less concerned about quarterly earnings and analyst reviews than they are about enhancing and extending their charity canopy to provide shade and succour to a remarkably diverse spread of people, causes and institutions.

x. Describe the role of JRD Tata as a leader and motivator.

Leadership, according to JRD meant motivating others. 'As chairman, my main responsibility is to inspire respect.' Sometimes referred to as the 'chairmen's chairman,' JRD adopted a management by consensus style: 'When a number of persons are involved I am definitely a consensus man,' he once said, adding: 'but that does not mean that I do not disagree or that I do not express my views. Basically it is a question of having to deal with individual men heading different enterprises. You have to adapt yourself to their ways and deal accordingly and draw out the best in each man. If I have any merit it is getting on with individuals according to their ways and characteristics. In fifty years I have dealt with a hundred top directors and I have got on with all of them. At times it involves suppressing yourself. It is painful but necessary. To be a leader you have got to lead human beings with affection.'

xi. Elaborate the statement: ‘The Tata group is India’s biggest business empire.’

During the last half of the twentieth century Tata entered several new businesses, many of them unconventional, and produced a vast range of products -- from airlines to hotels, trucks to locomotives, soda ash and other heavy chemicals to pharmaceuticals and financial services, tea and air conditioning to lipsticks and cologne.

The group seemed to make everything and do everything. One of Tata's earliest achievements was to cajole ten rival cement companies to merge and form the Associated Cement Companies, run by the Tatas. JRD strengthened existing businesses such as steel, power and hotels. At the same time, the group lost interest in some of its older core businesses. As an industrialist, JRD Tata is credited with placing the Tata Group on the international map. As an aviator and pioneer flier, he brought commercial aviation to India. As a patron of the arts, he was revered by India's artists, sculptors and performing artists; under JRD's tutelage, the Tatas became the biggest buyers, promoters and supporters of the art world in India.

xii. State and explain any six qualities of a successful entrepreneur.
Willpower
You have the strength to see things through--you don't vacillate or procrastinate. When you want it, you make it happen. The world's greatest achievers are those who have stayed focused on their goals and been consistent in their efforts.
Patience

You are willing to be patient, and you understand that, in everything, there are failures and frustrations. To take them personally would be a detriment.
Integrity

This should not have to be said, but it's seriously one of the most important attributes you can cultivate. Honesty is the best policy for everything you do; integrity creates character and defines who you are.
6. Passion

If you want to succeed, if you want to live, it's not politeness but rather passion that will get you there. Life is 10 percent what you experience and 90 percent how you respond to it.
7. Connection

You can relate to others, which in turns makes everything reach further and deepen in importance.
8. Optimism

You know there is much to achieve and much good in this world, and you know what's worth fighting for. Optimism is a strategy for making a better future--unless you believe that the future can be better, you're unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so.
9. Self-confidence

You trust yourself. It's as simple as that. And when you have that unshakeable trust in yourself, you're already one step closer to success.
10. Communication

You work to communicate and pay attention to the communicators around you. Most important, you hear what isn't being said. When communication is present, trust and respect follow.

No one plans on being mediocre; mediocrity happens when you don't plan. If you want to succeed, learn the traits that will make you successful and plan on living them out every day.

Be humble and great. Courageous and determined. Faithful and fearless. That is who you are, and who you have always been.

Lesson 4

Answer the following in 4 to 6 sentences

v. Express your views/ideas on: Service to humanity is service to Almighty.

The term “Service of mankind is service to God” means that selfless service for the cause of humanity is as important as worshiping to God. Love of mankind is, in Vivekananda’s opinion, the worship of God. This is the gist of all worship is to be pure and to do well to others. A person who devotes his life for the betterment of the human race is loved by God. If there is any God, He would rather want us to live not only for ourselves but for our fellowmen too. Great men knew this truth. Life to them was action. This is the service of others. A life lived for selfish gains, regardless of others needs, is worse than death. A bird or a beast collects food for itself and its young ones. It is some kind of work no doubt, but it is not that kind of work that man is expected to do. He is the roof and crown of creation and so he is supposed to live a larger life by applying himself to the service of humanity.

The food-dinner comprises rice, lentil soup and some vegetable gruel-is insipid. A doctor and a nurse come on their rounds a couple of times a day. At other times, the patients appear to be left to their fate. The place has the appalling moniker of the ward for lawaris or the abandoned.

ix. Summarize the contribution of Gurmeet Singh as a philanthropist.

For more than 20 years now, Singh has been visiting the abandoned patients' ward every night with food and medicines. He hasn't been on a vacation or stepped out of Patna for the past 13 years because, he says, he cannot abandon the abandoned. The unfailing devotion to his patients is matched by Singh's unchanging routine. Around nine every evening, he leaves his modest apartment-all his five brothers live on a floor in one of the city's oldest high-rises-and heads to the hospital. He picks up some money to pay for medicines - the five brothers put away 10 per cent of their monthly earnings in a donation box at home to pay for 'Singh's patients'-that are not provided by the hospital, where treatment is free. On the way, he stops at one of the many cheap hole-in-the-wall eateries that dot Patna to English Workbook Course Code: 22101 36 pick up rotis, vegetables, salad, eggs and curd to feed to his patients.

Lesson 5

Answer the following in 4 to 6 sentences

vi. State the additional tips for proper recycling of e-waste.
Check the condition of your electrical item. Does it still work? If so, think about donating your item. Schools, for instance, can often use refurbished computers. If you run an office and are upgrading, donation of your computers, printers, etc. can be especially helpful.
If you don’t want to donate your e-waste item, think about selling it.
If you don’t feel your item can be sold outright, you might be able to sell it to someone who can refurbish the item and then sell it on.
Alternatively you can give your item away for free. You can advertise your item on various websites, like Craigslist, to find someone interested in your item.
Not good enough to be donated/given away or sold? Then maybe recycling is the right route for you.
If you are getting rid of an old phone, ensure that your first cancel any service plan and remove the sim card (the sim card should be shredded or cut in half).
When possible, cell phones should be sent for refurbishment or recycling. “In 2009, approximately 38 percent of mobile devices collected for end-of-life management were reused or refurbished, and 62 percent were recycled for material recovery.”1
For all laptops, desktops, netbooks, phones, tablets, etc. make sure that you remove all personal data. Start by backing up all of your data onto an external hard drive to ensure you don’t accidentally lose anything you will need later.
Use a professional program to clear your device.
Where possible, remove your hard drive to dispose of separately.

vii. Develop four meaningful sentences on the given topic: Save Environment.

1. We should save drinking water. Water is a precious component of our environment. It should never be wasted.

2. We should never pollute water. Efforts should be made in making significant reduction in both domestic and industrial disposal in water bodies.

3. As far as practicable, the waste products should be recycled to make new items. The domestic and industrial garbage should be segregated as recyclable and non-recyclable before being dumped.

4. There should be a zero tolerance policy towards deforestation. Each one of us can contribute towards saving the environment by planting just one tree every-month.

5. We can make donations to NGOs that are engaged in planting trees, or in any-way working towards saving the environment.

6. Safer environmental friendly car and vehicles should be used. For short distances, people should be encouraged to use bicycle in place of motor based vehicles.

viii. Explain the terms: Recycle and Reuse.

Most of the garbage generated in the household can be recycled and reused. Organic kitchen waste such as leftover foodstuff, vegetable peels, and spoilt or dried fruits and vegetables can be recycled by putting them in the compost pits that have been dug in the garden. Old newspapers, magazines and bottles can be sold to the kabadiwala.

ix. Explain the given statement in five sentences: ‘When you dispose off e-waste properly, you’ll make the Earth a better place.’

It is time for everyone in our beautiful world to step up and take responsibility for their actions. Be a leader and not a follower. Take the time to properly dispose of your electronics, and make the phone calls that give you the needed information on how to follow ethical practices. The majority of e-waste recyclers hold the necessary certifications needed to properly dispose of electronics, so do your research and find one that works best for you. Make yourself a part of this important e-waste recycling community and do the right thing. because these small steps can make or break our environment.

x. Describe the role and responsibilities of the society in controlling e-waste hazards.

Environmental sustainability and proper e-waste recycling practices go hand in hand. Without proper recycling practices in place, our ecosystem and environment are heavily impacted. Sustainability is a common term, but when applied to the environment, it can appear to have an eerie, almost frightening effect. To sustain is to maintain or keep up. We have only one Earth, one environment, and one ecological system; the thought of not "keeping up or maintaining" could lead our society into an even more dire straits situation than we currently are in.

xi. Explain the positive steps that students can take to stop e-waste pollution.

The steps involved in the process prior to recycling include

a) Collection of waste from doorsteps, commercial places, etc.

b) Collection of waste from community dumps.

Lesson 6

Answer the following in 4 to 6 sentences

v. State the importance of situational intelligence.

Situational intelligence is critical during a crisis, and in preventing a crisis. But being aware of what is happening around you and understanding how information, various events, and personal or public actions affects you, your organization, and others gives an organization indispensable insight that could prevent a crisis or help in mitigating a crisis. The ability to see rising momentum around an event or topic through situational intelligence can help local authorities or corporations stave off a crisis through better decision-making, as much as using situational intelligence in the aftermath can help prioritize resources to people or areas that need them most.

vi. Express the views of author about the scoring marks for the career.

Scoring high marks is good. But, what is the point in keeping the marks as the main objective ignoring the foundation of building knowledge. It is the ‘learning’ factor that needs to be revamped. We need to be cautious in future as the real test lies in improving the overall quality of education rather than simply registering high pass percentage by mugging up. It is a genuine concern of all stake holders such as the academicians, the management of the schools, teachers and the state governments to take a closer look and completely revamp the system. After all it is the duty of everyone to make the student more knowledgeable rather than simply score high marks. The fact remains that knowledge based learning not only achieves their potential. But also really broadens the scope of having a bright future for the students.

vii. State the realization of HR Department after selecting candidates with good marks

The HR department of organizations realized, even when candidates came to them with 'good marks', most of them were not qualified for 'work'. The surprising revelation was that some candidates who scored good marks did so because of good 'memory' rather than intelligence. These good candidates knew how to memorize the subjects better than others. In some cases, it was just luck. What they studied was asked in the exams. These are the people who study in the last moments and ‘manage’ to score. Sadly they mislead many others to do the same and scrape through. This is dangerous for your future. In a few cases it was indeed good studies and intelligent understanding. The percent of the last category needed to be improved.

viii. State the meaning of the word, ‘Remarkable’, according to the author.

Remember, 'remarkable' is more than 'mark'. It has R (Really) and E (Exceptional) in the beginning. It includes 'able' (IQ, EQ and SQ) to complete it. Have Really Exceptional Marks (for a great pedestal) and be very Able (for take off - IQ EQ and SQ) too. Be ''R E MARK ABLE''. Live a R E Mark Able life. Read great books that make you believe you can be ‘remarkable’.

ix. Summarize the suggestions given by the author to make one’s life remarkable.

Nurture the company of people whose presence, whose comments, whose

life style makes you believe you can be ‘remarkable’. Meditate, exercise, and eat nourishing

food that provides you vital energy to live a remarkable life. Whatever happens, ‘believe in

yourself’. The creator always creates remarkable things. In ‘his’ factory, there is no ordinary

product. The fact that you have been created means you ‘can’ live a remarkable life. What

humans can do, god will not do. What God can do, humans cannot do. He has played his part

by creating us. Now it is up to us to play our part and create ourselves as ‘remarkable’ person.

With lots of love, prayers and best wishes,

x. List the qualities of emotionally stable people/describe the reaction of emotionally

stable people to stress and change.

turmoil EQ comes into picture. There are times, when decisions must be taken on the spot.

Even if you are not the decision maker, you must take decisions. Even if you do not have

enough data, you need to make your choices. These choices can make or break so much.

These are crux situations. What is required in these situations? When faced with difficult

situations, you must carry 'Self-Belief'. When faced with angry people, you must know how to

calm people down. When faced with a tragedy, you must be able to establish positivity. When

faced with huge losses, you must be able to rule with composure. When faced with problems,

you must be able to intensely search, identify and present solutions. When faced with critical

situations, you must be able to make important well thought of choices.

xi. State the reasons of introducing IQ, EQ and SQ test by HR department.

The HR people realized, mistakes were happening when people were recruited based only on marks. Hence, the IQ tests were introduced. It tested the ability of people to 'solve' rather than 'remember'. Since this new IQ tests were giving them good results, they got encouraged to research how to make things even better. Besides the IQ test, another new test called the EQ (Emotional Quotient) test was introduced. This tested the ability of candidatesto be emotionally stable. The latest development in this field is called SQ. This SQ stands for situational intelligence quotient. When you have time, IQ comes in the picture. When there are emotional turmoil EQ comes into picture.

Lesson 7

Express your views/ideas on: Positive thinking.

Optimism is a trait that should become more common, judging by Winston Churchill's famous quote that "a pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." Optimism has been proven to improve the immune system, prevent chronic disease, and help people cope with unfortunate news. Gratitude is associated with optimism and has been determined that grateful people are happier, receive more social support, are less stressed, and are less depressed. Recent research indicates that optimists and pessimists approach problems differently, and their ability to cope successfully with adversity differs as a result.

vi. Express your views/ideas on: Reaction to criticism.

It's natural to react strongly to unjust criticism, but this is rarely a wise career move. Instead, manage the immediate situation by remaining calm, getting your critic to repeat the comments and then clarifying that you understand them. You may spot that the criticism is based on a misunderstanding or a different perspective, in which case it is reasonably straightforward to iron this out. In more complicated situations, particularly when your critic is your boss, you will need to schedule an "offline" meeting to discuss the criticism.

viii. Describe the preparations of Arunima Sinha for the Everest Expedition.

The day she got discharged from the hospital, she went to meet Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to reach the summit (highest point) of Mount Everest. Apart from her family, Bachendri was the only person who took her ambition (of climbing the Mount Everest with artificial leg) seriously.

After meeting Bachendri Pal, she didn’t go home. Rather, she joined the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering for training. After completing a basic course, she has undergone rigorous training for 18 months to prepare herself for the big day. But, being a lonely girl, she could not resist them for longer and eventually, she was overpowered by them. Those inhuman guys threw her out of the running train. Another train coming on the parallel track run over her legs.

When she entered the death zone- 3500 feet from the top of Mount Everest- the most difficult terrain started. I saw dead bodies of mountaineers scattered all around. A Bangladeshi mountaineer took his last breath in front of her eyes whom she met not so long before. she was frightened, but, she kept on moving anyhow. You see- our bodies behave according to our thought process. I told myself that neither she can go back from here nor she can die before reaching the summit. Seeing me struggling immensely with the artificial leg, my Sherpa kept on advising me to return. But, I overturned his advice. she told him that she just can’t die before conquering this mountain. Once she reached the top, everything changed. It was something as if she got a new

lease of life despite of the fact that she literally ran out of all the oxygen supply. She raised

the Indian tricolor and placed some pictures of her idol (Swami Vivekananda) next to it. Then,

she took some pictures and videos of herself to produce the visual proofs of her achievement

in case she didn’t return alive.

xi. Explain the statement: ‘I was re-born at the summit of Mount Everest.’

Once she reached the top, everything changed. It was something as if she got a new lease of life despite of the fact that she literally ran out of all the oxygen supply. She raised the Indian tricolor and placed some pictures of her idol (Swami Vivekananda) next to it. Then, she took some pictures and videos of herself to produce the visual proofs of her achievement in case she didn’t return alive. She felt she was re-born at the summit of Mount Everest. In all, after climbing all these mountains, because she has learnt the true meaning of resilience, confidence and leadership and above all, humility.

xii. Summarize the success story of Arunima Sinha.

In 2011, twenty four year old Arunima Sinha was thrown off a moving train by thugs for refusing to hand over the gold chain she was wearing. She lost her left leg when a train went over it. While dealing with pitying murmurs of, “Who will marry you now,” and the absurd conspiracy theories that followed, she made a decision. She would climb Mount Everest. In 2013 she did just that, becoming the world’s first female amputee, and the first Indian amputee, to achieve this feat. Earlier this year she was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India. This May marks the second anniversary of her reaching Everest’s summit. In honour of this phenomenal accomplishment, Arunima Sinha spoke to YourStory about that ill-fated train trip, the hell that followed, why she decided to climb Everest and how it is in the worst tragedies that the human spirit learns to soar.

Lesson 8

Express your views/ideas on: Road Safety.

Road safety is a safety measure to reduce the risk of road accidents and road side injury because of the mistakes of people while driving on the road. We cannot count the daily road side accidents and death of people because of the driving mistakes and lack of road traffic rules followers. Every person going on the road has risk of injury or death. Such as pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, passengers, etc. Everyone needs to be well aware of the road traffic rules especially children and young people who are at significant road accident risks. According to the statistics (World Health Organization, 2008), it is found that most of the hospitalization cases and leading cause of death are because of the road trauma.

vi. Express your views/ideas on: Save Yourself from Mobile Addiction.

cell phone addiction may become more widespread as greater numbers of children are using cell phones. One study showed that Japanese children didn't make friends with peers who didn't have the phones. Another showed that three quarters of Hungarian children owned cell phones. A study in Italy showed that one quarter of the adolescents had multiple cell phones while in Great Britain 36% of college students surveyed admitted that they could not live without their cell phones. An unexpected result form the British study was that 7% of the students stated that they had lost a job or a relationship over their cell phone use.

vii. State the importance and need of wearing helmets.

Riding a motorcycle gives riders a sense of freedom on the open road. However, there are serious dangers involved in riding without a helmet. A motorcycle does not provide the structural protection that a car does to keep drivers safe in the event of an accident. Motorcyclists need to take extra precautions to protect their body. The most important place to start is by protecting the head. The head and brain is most vulnerable to injury in a motorcycle accident. Drivers and passengers wearing helmets increase their chance of survival significantly over non-helmet wearers. In 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated 1,699 lives were saved because individuals wore helmets. From 2008 to 2010, there were 14,283 motorcyclist fatalities in the United States, and 6,057 (42%) of those who died were not wearing helmets. It is important for motorcyclists to understand the risks of riding without a helmet. Riders who do not wear helmets are at risk of suffering a traumatic brain injury if they are in an accident. Without protection, the head is vulnerable to a traumatic impact in an accident even when traveling at low speeds.

xi. Explain the statement in six sentences: ‘Life is a precious, irreplaceable gift.’

If you take your life seriouslyu then you truly understood each day is a gift. Sometimes because our life is so busy we forget how life is so fragile. It is so ironic that we get a glimpse of it when someone is dying, diagnosis with a chronic disease, or when we see or hear something terrible happen around us but we tend to forget so soon and get into our ‘monkey march’ lifestyle. The quality of life should not be measured by the part of it. Life itself is the best gift. It is a precious gift. Nothing more, nothing less. Unless you understand this truth you can waste it so easily.Life is in itself an amazing gift. When you really understand this fact, you can understand the meaning of life. Life will have meaning when we understand it is a gift, an amazing gift.

xii. Describe any road accident you have seen.

Accidents or mishaps keep happening every day and every now and then. Some mishaps are unnoticeable or are a nuisance, others get serious and unavoidable. One trips and falls while looking at a poster, other clashes into a pole, still other smashes the tomatoes eyeing and slips like a skater. Such accidents are alright as they harm slightly and happen almost every day.Sometimes when an accident take place due to rashness of people and involves harming others, they become serious and alarming. Therefore, one should be careful on the road and in public places so as not to harm oneself as well as others. The other day, I saw a similar accident while I was a similar accident while I was returning from school. I was as usual walking on the footpath lost in my own thoughts about school, home works and class tests when a screeching sound broke the train of my thoughts. I turned around to see the source of the sound and what I saw, I think I will never be able to forget.

here was lying a young boy in a pool of blood hit by a jeep. The Jeep driver had tried to escape after overrunning the boy but was caught a few feet away by the assembled public. The sight of blood was really horrible. People gathered around the child. I too went to see who he was. He was probably in 9th or 10th and like me was returning home from a nearby school. Then quickly a man searched through his strewn books and found his diary. From the number found in the diary, he informed his guardian. Meanwhile, another man had called up the hospital for ambulance. After a few minutes the ambulance of a nearby private hospital came and carefully placed the boy on the stretcher and took him away. The boy apparently had a broken leg and arm and also had an injury on his head. Due to the collision he had become unconscious. So no one knew the extent of the injury on his head.

Lesson 9

iii. Explain the terms: Doer and Mentor

We realized that Lal underwent a transition at every stage. He was a doer and grew

up to be a manager. This graduated to the role of a leader and finally the mantle of a mentor

followed this up. He had to change as a person in each of these roles. He had to change his

thought process, his attitude and communication. All the roles are important. Each of us needs

to figure out in our business as to where we are positioned. Many small enterprises get

married to the 'doer' syndrome and the company would remain small. Many others would get

plastered to the 'manager' role. A few of them move to the 'leader' role, which is a whole lot of

communication, group strategy and skills of leading and motivating. It requires a tremendous

brain to be a leader. A mentor would be moulded out of compassion, selflessness and

visionary. Every characteristic is important. A doer is like a baby learning tiny steps, the

manager is running together, a leader is directing a large number of people in a run while a

mentor is creating a vision to all the runners and taking them there. The size of the

organization grows depending on how fast, smooth and clear the transition of the entrepreneur

is. A doer can be a mentor; this growth phase has to be embraced in every organization.

iv. Explain the terms : Delegator and Leader

The core foundation of the Situational Leadership Model is the belief that there is no single "best" approach to leadership. Instead, effective leadership is viewed as task-relevant. Therefore, the most successful leaders are the ones who are able to adapt their leadership styles across a broad range of varying maturity levels readily present within the average organization. Also factoring into the choice for leadership style are the individual employees' willingness and ability to take responsibility for the task as well as their applicable education and experience. Given the wide level of variance in these factors, choices surrounding leadership are highly subjective in regard to the person or work group that is being influenced as well as the specific job or function that has been assigned - a situation some say lends itself perfectly to the Situational Leadership Model.

v. Express your views /ideas on: Planning for success.

Perhaps the most important realization that an individual can make in their quest for personal growth is that there is no single formula that defines the path to personal success. We all have different goals and priorities, which mean that different activities and attitudes will make us feel good about ourselves. So how is it that we can define success for each individual based upon his or her natural strengths and weaknesses as well as inherited personality type? To be successful is to understand what is important to you, to recognize your weaknesses without hiding behind them, to strive for balance as well as open new doors in life.

Each personality type has views on what it is that makes them successful. Often, many people state their views of success based on what someone else's idea of what it is to be successful. However, among all these ideas of what it is to be successful a common idea is drawn. Successful means being able to understand what is important to you. If we spend our time and effort trying to meet somebody else's idea of success, and ignore or belittle any of our contrasting views, then we will find ourselves exhausted and unhappy. One cannot be successful until they have reached this mindset of happiness; it is not possible for one to be successful unless they are happy with their goals and achievements. Successfulness is the ability to understand what goals you strive for in life, and prioritizing so that you are able to achieve them. Realizing what is truly important to us is a major step towards achieving personal success.

vi. Express your views /ideas on: Entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurial development today has become very significant; in view of its being a key to economic development. The objectives of industrial development, regional growth, and employment generation depend upon entrepreneurial development. Entrepreneurs are, thus, the seeds of industrial development and the fruits of industrial development are greater employment opportunities to unemployed youth, increase in per capita income, higher standard of living and increased individual saving, revenue to the government in the form of income tax, sales tax, export duties, import duties, and balanced regional development. The word “entrepreneur” is derived from the French verb enterprendre, which means ‘to undertake’. This refers to those who “undertake” the risk of new enterprises. An enterprise is created by an entrepreneur. The process of creation is called “entrepreneurship”. Entrepreneurship is a process of actions of an entrepreneur who is a person always in search of something new and exploits such ideas into gainful opportunities by accepting the risk and uncertainty with the enterprise.

vii. State any four qualities of Mr. Lal that have inspired you.

1. An unwavering passion.

2. Open-mindedness.

3. The desire to be an expert.

4. A forward-looking approach.

5. A constant flow of ideas.

viii. Describe the various roles of Mr. Lal as a Manager.

When he became the 'Manager'. Managing people also meant teaching them work, coupled with balancing their egos. he had to undergo transition from a doer to a delegator in this phase. he used to delegate work and monitor the work progress. Most work issues escalated to him, and he had to be a good listener at this stage. Without being a good leader earlier, never he would have been an effective manager. As a doer he talked a lot, while as a manager, it had to be the listening part. The organizations grew, and any managers reported to him. Time to migrate as a leader had come. I had to lead the managers, inspire them to reach the goal of the organization. Here he had to undergo transition to be a motivator and guide them.

ix. Describe the role of Mr. Lal as a Doer of the organization.

when he started. he used to do everything. That phase helped me to sustain, as he had to curtail costs. It also helped him to know all the nuances of the business. Without that stage, he would've never understood higher management thoughts. He continued, a Finance Director should have been an accountant at sometime of his career to perform effectively. he used to do the most talking as a 'doer'.

xi. Describe the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur.
